2 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup farinaŽ
1/4 cup cornstarch
2 teaspoons vanilla
10 eggs -- beaten
1 orange peel
2 quarts milk
1 pound phyllo dough
3/4 pound sweet butter
4 cups greek sweet desert syrup
Add first eight ingredients into a pot and heat on stove while stirring until mixture thickens and begins to boil. Put aside and let cool.
In a large baking pan layer 1/2 the phyllo dough in the bottom, remember to brush each layer with butter. Pour the mixture into the baking pan and cover with remaining phyllo dough, brushing each layer with butter.
Cut into triangles or squares and bake in a 350 degree oven for 50 minutes or until golden brown. Pour cold greek sweet desert syrup over custard. Serve cold.
This is one of my wifes favorite desserts, only if I is made the right way. She'll say it has to be a soft creamy custard not something that is thick and rubbery. Experiment with this recipe to find out how you like it. For a thicker custard add another egg. For a loser custard add a splash more milk. Enjoy.
